Crowd of people gathered closely together during a crisis in Nepal

Help and Hope for Nepal in a Time of Crisis

The disaster in Nepal is a sobering reminder of how fragile life can be—and how urgently help is needed. Alongside practical assistance, GCMM is committed to bringing the hope of the Gospel to people facing loss and uncertainty.

This connection did not begin with the current crisis. GCMM’s ministry among people in the region goes back many years through local radio and the Maithili-language Superbook.

Disasters have a way of suddenly bringing distant suffering close to home. Behind every image of a destroyed home is a family—a life filled with loved ones, memories, and hopes for the future.

For those affected by the disaster in Nepal, the immediate needs are basic but urgent: food, clean water, and safe shelter. When the foundations of everyday life are suddenly taken away, the focus can become simply making it through today.

Yet in the midst of loss, another deeper question may also arise:

Where does my help come from?

Hope in the Midst of Disaster

Hannu Haukka reminds us that when catastrophic events affect our world, we can look beyond what is happening around us.

In Matthew 24, Jesus speaks about wars, famines, and earthquakes—events Haukka sees reflected in the world of our generation.

Yet the message of Jesus is not one of fear, but of hope. Even during difficult times, believers can lift their eyes and hold firmly to His promises. As Luke 21 reminds us, we can take courage and lift up our heads with confidence.

But hope calls us to do more than simply wait.

It calls us to respond with compassion—to reach out to those who are suffering and offer practical help where it is needed most.

Meeting Urgent Needs, Sharing God’s Love

While helping meet immediate needs, GCMM also seeks to share the lasting hope of the Gospel with communities where the ministry already has longstanding relationships.

Christian compassion begins with the individual—their needs, their circumstances, and the realities they are facing.

Those who are hungry need food. Those who have lost their homes need shelter. Those who are afraid need safety and reassurance. But people also need someone willing to listen and remind them that they are not alone.

The Gospel tells us of a God who cares deeply for people, even in the midst of crisis. The love of Jesus calls us not only to share a message of hope, but also to demonstrate that love through practical acts of compassion.

A helping hand, a listening ear, or a simple word of encouragement can mean so much when someone’s life has suddenly been turned upside down.

A Longstanding Connection With the Maithili People

GCMM’s connection with the people of Nepal goes back many years.

In 1998, pastor and missionary Tomi first traveled to the Maithili region, where ministry began through local radio broadcasts that shared the Christian message with people in their own language.

When funding for his radio ministry later came to an end, a connection was established with GCMM that allowed the broadcasts to continue.

That partnership eventually led to another project: translating and dubbing Superbook into Maithili so children and families in Nepal and northeastern India could experience Bible stories in their own language.

The Maithili programs were completed, but they were never broadcast.

For years, the recordings remained unused. Then, in April 2025, the missing tapes were rediscovered in GCMM’s archives.

By that time, the media landscape had changed dramatically. The internet and digital video platforms now offered new possibilities for finally bringing these programs to the people for whom they had originally been created.

For Tomi, the discovery renewed a vision that had begun decades earlier:

“Now Superbook can bring the clear message of the Gospel to the Maithili people. God has opened the door. I would have no peace if I don’t give it my all.”

When the Gospel Speaks Your Language

The animated Superbook series brings Bible stories to life for children in a way that is engaging and easy to understand.

When children hear those stories in their own language—the language they speak, think, and ask questions in—the message can become even more personal.

This is one of the strengths of media ministry. A program created today can continue reaching children and families for years, opening conversations about faith, love, and hope.

Behind every translation are people who have contributed their time, skills, prayers, and financial support to help make that possible.

The story of the Maithili-language Superbook is a powerful example of the long-term impact of this kind of ministry.

Work that began many years ago now has another opportunity to reach a new generation and share a message of hope that can carry people through many different seasons of life—especially the difficult ones.

Help for Today, Hope for Tomorrow

Psalm 121 gives words to a question that often rises during times of crisis:

“Where does my help come from?”

The psalmist lifts his eyes and finds the answer in the Lord, the Creator of heaven and earth.

That same trust also calls us to respond.

We can pray. We can provide practical help. And we can help make it possible for the Good News of Jesus to reach people who are hurting.

Disasters may quickly disappear from the headlines, but for those who have been affected, rebuilding can take months or even years. The need continues long after the attention of the world has moved somewhere else.

That is why continued prayer, compassion, and support matter.

Please pray for the people of Nepal and for those carrying out relief work. Pray for protection for families, strength and comfort for those who have experienced loss, and wisdom for those working to bring help where it is needed most.

Through your support of GCMM, you can help meet practical needs while also helping bring the hope of the Gospel to people facing an uncertain future.

Together, we can bring help for today and hope for tomorrow.
