Yet, they crave love, they crave to know that they really matter to somebody. According to official statistics supplied by the government of Russia there are almost 4 million minor-aged children living on the streets. They are either totally on their own or forced to spend most of their time wandering the streets without love or guidance because Mom and Dad are rarely home. Many are hungry and cold. Out of desperation, they turn to petty crime. The situation is equally hopeless for the estimated 20 thousand child prisoners who live behind barbed-wire topped concrete walls in 64 prison camps for children across Russia and Central Asia. They do not even have proper footwear to protect their feet from the cold Russian winters. Their living quarters are drafty and cold. Their subsistence diet lacks adequate nutrition. Hygiene is at a bare minimum. Their barracks reek with the stench of urine. But even more than their horrific living conditions, the greatest thing missing from their life is love. These children are growing up without knowing the love and nurturing of Mom or Dad. Many live an endless cycle between living on the streets and going to prison.
